Today, no one doubts the potential of Artificial Intelligence to change the world around us. In line with what Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, has said, AI “has the potential to solve some of the greatest challenges facing humanity” .
In this sense, the initiatives around the so-called AI for Good demonstrate that Artificial Intelligence can also be applied to solve major problems of humanity, such as 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The implementation of theAgenda 2030 It undoubtedly involves leveraging the possibilities offered by AI-based solutions.
As an example, I would like to mention the research work recently carried out on the occasion of the Marine Datathon from Gran Canaria. In the competition, participants had to create an Artificial Intelligence solution that would detect the presence of fauna in audio obtained by underwater microphones distributed along the local coast.
The signals to be detected were related to marine fauna, such as whale songs or dolphin whistles. With this new tool, biologists and researchers can detect which species inhabit the area, the number of specimens and whether they tend to return periodically to a specific place.
Another example could be the hackathon recently organized in Valencia to promote sustainable and intelligent tourism. The winners have developed a mobile application that, thanks to the integration of multiple data sources in real time, is capable of carrying out an optimized analysis of environmental variables that affect the points of interest and priorities of users. In this way, the optimal route is proposed so that the experience lived in the city by pet owners is easy, respectful and sustainable.
The great sustainable development challenges that lie ahead require joining forces and for this reason, promoting the collaboration between Business-Administrations-Universities carried out by organizations such as CIDAI is key.
