This paper looks at the yellow bin and the goal of the recycling plant in this case is to separate the incoming waste streams into a number of (sub)streams of a single kind. Each stream is then taken to a specific plant for even more specific treatment: cans will be used to make new cans, cartons will be turned into aluminium foil and cabinets, plastic bottles will be used to make new bottles and so on. The idea behind this approach is to extract higher purity fractions from recycling and waste streams using sensor-based sorting.
