The Aina project and its Aina Kit makes available to developers text, speech and machine translation models which include advanced support for artificial intelligence in Catalan.

In this session we will share the technical details of the latest LLMs developed at the BSC and through brief demonstrations show some of the potential applications and risks for the BSC’s AI text and speech models and language technologies.

Led by the Government of Catalonia in partnership with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS), the Aina project is part of the Artificial Intelligence Strategy of Catalonia (Catalonia.AI).

Programa

  1. Latest LLM developments at the BSC in the Aina project: the 7b model
  2. Development of advanced Text-to-Speech and Speech-to-Text systems for Catalan variants.
  3. Aina Kit, the suite of resources available to developers.
  4. Next steps.

Masterclass given by the BSC and the Government of Catalonia

Taught by:

Dr Carlos Rodríguez, Established Researcher, Language Technologies Unit of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) Dr Carlos Rodríguez Penagos is a researcher and expert in Language Technologies. He works at the BSC in the LT Unit to harness HPC in leveraging the possibilities of natural language processing for public and private institutions as part of the Aina and PlanTL projects.

He has been a senior researcher in technology transfer and consultancy firms. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from Pompeu Fabra University specialising in Computational Linguistics. His main areas of interest are information extraction, text mining, natural language processing, knowledge engineering and opinion mining. He has taught and coordinated several international research projects at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and the National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) where he mined biomedical literature. He has received several research grants from the National Council of Science and Technology (Mexico) and the Government of Catalonia.

Jose Giraldo, Researcher Engineer, Language Technologies Unit at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) Jose Omar Giraldo is a research engineer specialising in large-scale audio processing and text-to-speech models. He has been involved in projects such as Rainforest Connection and Orcasound to develop innovative methods for exploring sound datasets.
