In this masterclass, we will explore the topic of data spaces and their contribution to promoting data sharing and creating new opportunities for applying technologies such as AI and Machine Learning.
To begin with, what is a data space? It is a digital ecosystem where various actors share data voluntarily and securely using common governance, organisational, regulatory and technical mechanisms. Data spaces enable an environment of trust between these actors, allowing them to not only control access to their data but also control where those data are stored, processed and used.
These data spaces are considered a key part of the data economy vision (expected to be 4% of Spanish GDP by 2025), and as such the EU and its member states, including Spain, are investing heavily in these infrastructures for strategic sectors such as industry, health, mobility and tourism.
The primary concepts of data spaces, the architectures and solutions available and the main components needed to create a functional data space will be described. Furthermore, use cases and real-world examples of existing data spaces in various European countries will be presented.
Finally, we will analyse the European and national initiatives that are defining the way forward such as Gaia-X and IDSA.
