{"id":9203,"date":"2023-02-01T16:49:12","date_gmt":"2023-02-01T15:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cidai.eu\/the-white-paper-on-artificial-intelligence-applied-to-cybersecurity-highlights-the-great-potential-for-economic-growth-of-this-sector-and-identifies-the-formation-and-creation-of-a-regulatory-framewor\/"},"modified":"2023-02-01T16:49:12","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T15:49:12","slug":"the-white-paper-on-artificial-intelligence-applied-to-cybersecurity-highlights-the-great-potential-for-economic-growth-of-this-sector-and-identifies-the-formation-and-creation-of-a-regulatory-framewor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cidai.eu\/en\/the-white-paper-on-artificial-intelligence-applied-to-cybersecurity-highlights-the-great-potential-for-economic-growth-of-this-sector-and-identifies-the-formation-and-creation-of-a-regulatory-framewor\/","title":{"rendered":"The white paper on artificial intelligence applied to cybersecurity highlights the great potential for economic growth of this sector and identifies the formation and creation of a regulatory framework as its main challenges."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The creation of specialized training itineraries and a collaborative environment to share data securely, as well as the adoption of a legal framework that ensures privacy and an ethical framework to achieve a balance between technological advances, business interests and guarantees for citizens are some of the keys included in the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/storage.cdn.eurecat.org\/CIDAI\/WhitePapers\/ACC_CIDAI_AICiberseguretat.pdf\">White paper on Artificial Intelligence applied to Cybersecurity<\/a>&#8216;, to promote the adoption of artificial intelligence in the different layers and processes of cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p>The document, presented by the Cybersecurity Agency of Catalonia and the Centre of Innovation for Data Tech and Artificial Intelligence (CIDAI), within the framework of the Barcelona Cybersecurity Congress, points out the benefits offered by the use of technologies based on artificial intelligence in the identification, protection, detection, response and recovery phases to improve security management, while also highlighting the revolution that tools such as the recently created ChatGPT will bring to the use of artificial intelligence in society and also in the field of cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p>The Director General of the Cybersecurity Agency of Catalonia, Tom\u00e0s Roy, highlights that the entity has promoted the preparation of the white paper due to the &#8220;key role&#8221; that AI will play in the near future to face &#8220;the main current challenges of cybersecurity, such as the need for greater reaction capacity in the face of the increase in cyberattacks, the growth of operational complexity and the lack of talent&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In the words of the director of CIDAI and the Digital Area of \u200b\u200bEurecat, Joan Mas, &#8220;CIDAI, in its mission to bring technological innovation in AI and data closer to the different sectors of the Catalan economy, has brought together experts from i2CAT, IDEAI-UPC and Eurecat, all of whom are members of CIDAI, to produce this white paper that provides a practical vision of the impact of AI on cybersecurity, so that any company and affected agent can begin or continue their digital transformation process with the necessary mechanisms to deal with the new panorama of emerging threats and risks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the white paper, artificial intelligence is a technology that in several aspects is very effective in protecting the infrastructures and digital assets of companies and organizations from cyberattacks, although the increase in digitalization, both in the social and business spheres, generates a greater amount of data and it becomes more difficult to protect it. In this scenario, the document places a priority on integrating solutions based on artificial intelligence technologies into cybersecurity systems.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the white paper points out the limitations and barriers that hinder the implementation of artificial intelligence in cybersecurity and, therefore, also identifies recommendations to overcome them. Firstly, he believes that new training itineraries are needed that include both disciplines and underlines the need to develop collaborative environments for access to data for training that respect data protection regulations, as well as data spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, it indicates the need to adopt a legal framework that ensures data privacy, while encouraging and speeding up its sharing. Finally, it recommends the adoption of an ethical framework to achieve a balance between technological advances, business interests and guarantees for citizens.<\/p>\n<h2>The revolution of AI-based tools, like ChatGPT, in cybersecurity<\/h2>\n<p>The document highlights the revolution that the emergence of ChatGPT, a conversational artificial intelligence model that can interact in a similar way to humans and is capable of generating source code, is generating in cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p>In this sense, it highlights that this tool can favor the growth of cybersecurity threats, since for example it has the capacity to generate pieces of malicious software (<em>malware<\/em>) by cybercriminals without technical skills, to write malicious, convincing, and grammatically correct emails to launch campaigns <em>phishing<\/em> or to generate code that changes cryptographic encryption to circumvent traditional security mechanisms, among others. And, on the other hand, it is also a useful tool for cybersecurity to find and fix vulnerabilities when developing secure code or to detect malware through reverse engineering much faster than a human operator.<\/p>\n<h2>The cybersecurity and artificial intelligence sectors in Catalonia<\/h2>\n<p>According to the white paper, the artificial intelligence and cybersecurity sectors have great growth potential in Catalonia thanks to a consolidated knowledge system with universities and research and technology centers, the ability to attract talent and the leadership of initiatives such as the CATALONIA.AI strategies and the National Cybersecurity Plan.
